So the prices at Maccas have gone up again, it went through on the system, but the manager forgot to change it on the board
So this customer came in asking for a cheeseburger, and I said “it’s $2.40 please”. He paused, and said, “wasn’t it $2.30?” I replied, “yeah, the prices just went up recently.”
He pointed at the board and said, “it’s still advertised as $2.30 there.” I looked up and agreed, “yes, but I have to go buy what the system is charging.”
He got indignant, “but by law, whatever you advertise is how much you should be charging. I’m not paying the higher price when you’ve advertised $2.30.”
And, I mean, he’s totally and utterly right, that is exactly the law. But we’re a franchise, our prices are set way above our heads - even our store owner, I don’t think, has a say in the prices - so my shift manager definitely can’t do anything about it. But she’s still the shift manager, which means that the discrepancy is something she has to sort out at that point in time. So there she is trying to explain to the customer that it is beyond her to change the pricing for him specifically, but at the same time yes, she is the manager in charge. In the end, the guy relented and paid the 10c extra…
And before you judge him, I have to say that he is completely justified, even if it is 10c difference. But man the tension between Tina and that guy while she tried to explain…and all I could do was sink away…
One of the biggest reasons why I definitely will never want to be a manager at a franchise like that. If I want to be a store manager, I’m going to run my own store and be my own boss.
